policies & Procedures

Technology Acceptable Use Policy

The technology  provided by the Brink Elementary Library  contributes to student learning, teaching, and communication. Because of this, users are required to sign a Statement of Assurance in which they agree to  comply with all of the provisions of this policy:

  1. All use of technology must be for educational or communication purposes that support the mission and goals of Brink Elementary.
  2. Users agree to follow the technology code of conduct. The behavior exhibited on the network is representative of the school and community.
  3. Accounts are to be used only by the authorized owner of the account.
  4. All communications and information accessible via the network should be assumed property of the District.
  5. Network use can be monitored and recorded at any time.
  6. Noncompliance with these provisions may result in loss of access to the network or device.

Scheduling Policy

All classes have a 15 minute scheduled class period each week to check-out books.  Students also visit the library during rotation time to participate in interactive Read-Alouds, Makerspace, projects, and activities that correlate with the classroom curriculum.

In addition, Fourth and Fifth graders may visit the library every day during lunch and recess to check out materials, get started on homework assignments, conduct research, play board games, draw, read, or relax with friends. Third graders may visit the library during recess on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Circulation Policy

Students in Kindergarten, First, and Second grades may check out one book per week.  Students in Third, Fourth, and Fifth grades may check out two books per week.

In order to check out a new book, the student must return all of their previous library books.

Reference and some special materials do not circulate.

Student Conduct

Patrons of the Brink Elementary Library will:

  1. Treat all books and library materials with care.
  2. Show respect to all library staff, volunteers, and classmates.
  3. Walk at all times.
  4. Maintain voice levels between 1-2.
  5. Listen carefully to directions.
  6. Place books and items in their designated spots.

Overdue Notices and Fines

Overdue notices will be printed out and distributed to students at school periodically to ensure that books will be returned in a timely manner and to help remind students about books that need to be returned to the library.   No fines are assessed for overdue books.

If a book is accidentally damaged, parents/students should not attempt to repair it.  The book should be brought immediately to the library so that the librarian can repair it and return it to circulation, if possible.  If a book is lost or damaged beyond repair, the student will be required to pay to replace the book.  Payment for a lost book will be reimbursed if the book is found and returned in good condition in that same school year as payment was made.  Debts remaining at the end of the school year may be turned in to the office and become a part of the student’s permanent file.  Any items checked out at the time a student withdraws from school must be returned or paid for upon withdrawal.

Faculty Checkouts

Faculty members are welcome to check out an unlimited number of materials for as long as needed. The library is open weekdays from 7:30 am until 3:30 pm for faculty to browse and checkout resources. In addition, faculty may submit requests for materials via the online form, by email, or by phone. Faculty members are strongly encouraged to submit a book wish form for any resources that may enhance the library collection.

Please note that periodicals and equipment must be checked out at the circulation desk if taken outside the library media center.  Items should be returned after use so that others may use them.

WE BELIEVE IN THE FREEDOM TO READ

Our library is proud to offer a vast collection of print and multimedia resources. Our librarian is trained to identify trusted high-quality resources that are appropriate for the learning differences, maturity levels, and interests of the student patrons we serve. Great care is taken in selecting materials that support the curriculum and promote enjoyment of reading. Our collection represents a wide range of interests, viewpoints, and experiences. As a result, we can effectively foster critical thinking and encourage analytical discussion in a safe space. Any attempt to remove materials that go against an individual’s personal preference would be an infringement upon the student's First Amendment rights. If, however, you have read a specific material in its entirety and find it to contain pervasively vulgar material, a formal book reconsideration form is available online. All forms will be reviewed by the Censorship Committee.
